Translucent material not translucent

Hi,

I am trying to create a lamp with a translucent shade (milk glass in this case). I have tried all sorts of combinations of materials to no avail. The “translucent” material seems the obvious choice for this, but when I apply that material it is completely opaque and not translucent at all.  See attached image.

It looks absolutely no different than if I leave the “auto” default material on there.  Am I doing something wrong or is the translucent material just not actually translucent, as the name would imply?

The transparent glass materials are too clear and reducing the opacity of the material also makes it too see-through. I need light to show through it but not be able to see any objects on the other side through it.

your right to use the transluscent material but you need to change the opacity on sketchup so you can get the right effect. I quickly modelled your scene you showed me and played about with the opacity and this was the final outcome (however I dont know what that random bit of noise is in the lampshade)

Thanks Shaun.

When I adjust the opacity of the material to 82 like you did and kick a render with it set as translucent, it doesn’t look like yours at all. See attachment.

Not sure what I’m doing different. Only thing I see is that your material in the native sketchup material editor is split half white, half gray, while mine is a solid square in the thumbnail. I’ll be honest, I’m not entirely sure what that means. In the default SU material it seems that split is showing the front and back face colors, while in the SU “glass” textures it seems it is showing the opacity? Does the material being split with two different tones in the thumbnail make a difference?

Your SU material editor looks different than mine (I guess because you are on a mac and I’m on a pc), so it’s a bit hard to totally compare all the SU material settings you have going on. Do the Sketchup (not shaderlight) material settings even matter for the translucent materials in SL?

Could you possibly give me your sketchup file so I can just load it exactly as you have it setup and see what it’s like when I render?

More info: I have both the front and back of the faces painted with the same material. In this particular render I have dimensionality to the shade (so two layers of geometry basically), but it doesn’t seem to render any different when it’s just one plane.

I have three lights under the lamp shade; two area lights, one facing up, one facing down and one point light.

Also, What are your Shaderlight render settings (lighting environment, etc) and light editor settings?

I havent got the model anymore, but the render setting was physical sky, and set the sketch up sunlight to either early morning or midnight to allow the light to be seen
