The coating layer provides a reflective layer on the base surface. This reflective layer is capable of glossy reflections when used in conjunction with Reflection Options.

Color – The color of light reflected by the coating layer. Light reflected by the coating will be filtered by this color. Due to Fresnel effects, the coating color will have more effect at glancing angles than at facing angles.
Roughness – Controls the roughness of the coating layer and therefore the “glossiness” of reflections from the coating. The effective range is from 0.0 to 0.1. A value of 0.0 means the coating is perfectly smooth and reflections will be sharp and clear. A value of 0.1 means the coating is rough and reflections will be diffused. The quality of “glossy” reflections is also dependent upon the Number of Samples value set in the Reflection Options of the Art Professional material.
Index of Refraction – The Index of Refraction (IoR) of the coating layer. All materials have an effective IoR, even if they are not transparent. For opaque materials the IoR controls the level of reflectivity from a surface. An IoR of 1.0 means the surface is completely matte. Higher values gradually increase surface reflectivity. Because reflectivity is controlled using the true physical property of IoR in the Art Professional material, all reflections are Fresnel in nature, meaning the reflections are stronger when the surface is at a glancing angle to the viewer and weaker when the surface faces the viewer directly.
Index of Refraction (Outside) – Controls the IoR of the medium light is traveling through before it reaches the surface. The apparent IoR of a surface is dependent on the IoR of the medium the light is traveling through to reach the surface, for example a surface would appear less reflective underwater than in air. Unless your surface is underwater, leave this value at 1.0!
Normal/Bump Map – Applies a bump map to the reflective layer (independent of the Base Layer bump map).
