Subsurface is a very subtle shading effect. It is NOT subsurface scattering as applies to translucent materials (such as skin or candle wax). In this context subsurface replicates the microscopic effects of light penetrating just below the diffuse base layer of the material. It is dependent upon the angle of view and the base layer IoR
| • | Uniform – The color of light diffusely scattered from the subsurface layer. The intensity of this color is dependent on the angle of incidence of the light and the surface IoR. Note that there is no distance control. This shading effect does not scatter light into the sub-surface to re-emerge at another location, it is purely a local effect. |
| • | Forward – The color of light scattered in the subsurface layer in the forward direction (i.e. in the same direction as the incident light). On some surfaces (for example paper) there is forward scattering due to first-surface reflection in the fiber structure. |
