The sky’s the limit for Moxon Architects
Rendering technology from ARTVPS is enabling award winning architecture studio Moxon, to deliver outstanding 3D visualizations to clients including the Victoria and Albert Museum and General Motors Future Fuels division.
Built around 64-bit architecture and world leading mental ray rendering software, RenderServer has enabled Moxon to render bigger and more detailed models with the guarantee they will get the desired result every time.
To produce the complex detail required by their clients Moxon typically use large architectural models that include displacement mapping as well as specialist lens and volume shaders. Whilst all adding to the intricacy of the final image, the further demands placed on their previous rendering solution meant that sometimes even test renders would fail.
Ben Addy, Director at Moxon commented, “One project for Italian furniture maker Tacchini required a number of chairs to be shown ‘raining’ on a piazza. The chairs are a particle system that is animated with full motion blur enabled therefore the required large amounts of data to be rendered.”
“In early versions of the image we had to limit the number of chairs as even our 64-bit workstations couldn’t complete the job”, Addy continued, “As soon as we rendered it to renderserver we just kept adding chairs to the scene. In fact we only stopped where we did because we needed the image in the same afternoon – we could have had far more chairs in the sky if we had more time.”
Brian Tyler, CEO at ARTVPS said, “The need to render larger, more detailed models quickly means that architectural studios such as Moxon can no longer rely on their workstations alone. As a network solution RenderServer fits seamlessly in to any studio’s workflow and places no burden on individual workstations when rendering. This not only means faster, reliable results but leaves 3D artists free to produce outstanding, detailed designs for any project.”
Renderserver is a one stop, fully integrated rendering solution that combines high performance hardware with advanced rendering software to deliver an easy to use, dedicated mental ray® network renderer.

Moxon is an award winning architecture studio operating in both architectural research and conventional practice. The firm was the youngest selected for the Architect’s Journal 40 Under 40 Award in 2005.
The practice has diverse clients, from the Victoria and Albert Museum and clothing manufacturer Benetton to General Motors Future Fuels division. Recent completed projects include the new London studios of one of the UK’s premier independent automotive design consultancies and the first in a series of new footbridges in the Cairngorm National Park in Scotland.
In addition to his role in Moxon, director Ben Addy is a BSc Tutor at the Bartlett School of Architecture [UCL] and sits on the RIBA Building Futures Advisory Board.
